Futures Geyserland golfer Kevin Bang stood up when it counted to take out the annual Ōhope 10,000 recently.

He went bang off the tee, was dialled in with his irons and clutched up with the putter to win the event for the first time.

Ōhope Beach Golf Links general manager and two-time defending champion Ryan Walker said it was a cracking couple of days on the course.

“It was a very strong field with some good golf played across the two days,” Walker said.

Bang played well when it mattered and Walker said he was a deserved winner.

Players were lucky with the conditions

“Playing conditions over the weekend were perfect, and there was some great golf on display. “After the first round there were three players joint for the lead, including Michael Trass from Hastings, local boy myself, and young gun Kevin Bang, all posting rounds of 72.”

There was also a group of quality golfers just a shot or two back.

“Only one shot behind was bomber Houston Te Puni and Marty Field but it was Kevin Bang who held it together long enough to take home the trophy shooting a 71 on the Sunday,” Walker said.

Second place was Ben Jujnovich, who finished one shot behind, with local club champion Matthew Purdy scoring the best round on day two with a 69, bumping him up to a third-place finish.

Josh Wilson and Hyosup Bae were top in the division 1 stableford competition, while Sean Purdy took out the division 2 and Rikki Jones, division 3.

Wilson said they were grateful to everyone who helped make tournament a success, including the greenkeepers, sponsors and tournament organisers, and volunteers.

The tournament has been going for more than 30 years, and Walker said it showed no signs of slowing down.

On November 14, the club has its annual Hams competition, which is always popular.
