The latest picture of the sculpture that is being considered for erection in Whakatāne, shows a figure closer to an elephant than a leggy and curious kiwi.
Please, do not foist this ugly, huge and ridiculous artwork on the good folks of Whakatāne.
We, alone, have the opportunity to call ourselves “The Kiwi Capital of New Zealand” and even “The World”.
Why waste this wonderful honour, with this huge and ugly monstrosity at the entrance to our wonderful and delightful town.
So many folks, over many years, have worked tirelessly to ensure that the pests and other dangers to the kiwis habitat have been removed.
Kiwis have responded so well to that conservation protection, with increased numbers, better life histories, and thriving well.
Please, honour these community workers and their huge contribution to kiwi conservation and resultant high conservation status.
We are all Kiwis, and especially the community of Whakatāne and surrounds, we honour this neat little ratite as one of our own, and not an elephant.
