For Ricky Callaghan and Sabrina Biemmi, taking on the management of Maraehako Campground is a case of moving from one paradise to another.
The couple have made the move from Waihau Bay to take up the reins at the family owned campground for the 2026-27 summer season, welcoming holidaymakers back to a familiar spot along State Highway 35.
Located at Maraehako Bay, about an hour’s drive from Ōpōtiki, the campground offers a chance to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of a coastal camping holiday.
Callaghan said the couple were keen to get started early this season, with the blessing of the Whānau Trust, giving them time to get to grips with the work involved before the summer rush.
“I have always admired the immaculate grass at Maraehako when going past and it is awesome to now be responsible for this,” he said.

“With the blessing of the Whānau Trust we opened up a little bit earlier this season, so we could really wrap our heads around all that is involved before it gets busier.”
With warmer weather arriving, keeping the grounds tidy has already become a regular job.
“The grass really shoots up fast, so it has been good to use these first few weeks to get into a good system for mowing to keep things nice for the campers.”
Beyond the mowing, Callaghan said it was the exceptional setting and relaxed atmosphere that made Maraehako special.
“Maraehako is such a unique spot and we really want campers to have a great time, create memories and have that traditional Kiwi camping experience. Go fishing, toast marshmallows on the fire and really unwind.”
The bay also has a natural swimming spot where the river forms a pool before flowing through the rocks into the ocean, providing a sheltered option for families when the sea is rougher.
“This is really great for the kids and parents, especially if the sea gets a bit rough,” he said.
The holiday atmosphere has already been building, with Callaghan enjoying seeing visitors arrive ready to switch off from everyday life.
“Everyone is in such a great mood when they come here; they are totally in holiday mode. The guys usually head straight to the beach to throw a line out or jump in a kayak and go fishing, leaving their wives to set up camp.”
With positive feedback from early visitors and locals already offering ideas, the couple is looking forward to their first full summer season at the campground.
“We have had lots of great feedback already from campers and a few ideas from locals so we are really looking forward to this year’s holiday season and hope everyone has a great experience here.”
For the new managers, it is about settling into their new surroundings and helping visitors make the most of a summer break down the coast.
