Response to Keith Melville’s Tax flip-flop exposed (Beacon letters September 25)

Keith Melville’s letter characterised Labour’s decision to leave landlord tax deductibility untouched as a ‘tax flip-flop.”

In the letter he used words like “humiliating, weaponise, taunting, vilifying, hypocritical” to excite reader attention about his interpretation of events.

Labour MP Deborah Russell recently explained the Labour Party’s proposal for a capital gains tax requires retention of the landlord interest deduction.

It is standard practice in countries that have implemented CGT on investment property.

Removal of the interest deduction would equate to a double tax. Instead of attacking it as a flip-flop, why not recognise it as ‘doing the right thing?’
