The bane of those of us who make regular contributions to the letters to the editor columns is that events may overtake the subject that has exercised our ire.

So, I can empathise with Keith Melville and his eloquent take down of Chris Hipkins and his so-called flip-flop over the landlord rebate, only to have that missive go to press the day after the National Party announces a pause on their much-vaunted local body shake up.

A flip- flop of a magnitude that beggar’s belief. Never mind the money and time that councils up and down the country have invested in this “Gun to the Head” proposal.

Nope, we’ll just change our mind and as a last piece of arrogance, announce that the procedure will carry on “after the election”, like the National Party have the election in the bag and voting is merely a formality.
