What a shocking story, but we are not surprised.

The need for a modern-style retirement village is needed now, not in 10 years.

I’m of the 70-plus age group and we often have chats about where to go when we need to downsize Just in my area, I know of two couples that have taken their money and gone out of Whakatāne because there isn’t a proper retirement village here.

We don’t want to leave friends and community that we’ve built up over our working life. We have spent our earnings in this town but now we can’t spend our retirement days here in a modern environment which is really sad.

Yes, we know about Bunyen Road; that was always going to fail. Shoving old people way out there was just horrid.
