Wairere Falls
.
Graham Steenson
More than one recent walk along The Strand has delivered a uniformly depressing vista: footpaths almost devoid of people and too many empty carparks. All signs of a wobbling economy.
But all is not lost. There are some low-cost actions that could be taken to bring some life back to the town.
Consideration could be given to establishing regular (respectful) tourist cruises around White Island.
This would be an almost certain winner and equally certain money-maker.
Another, once popular attraction and one that could be again, is the Wairere Falls.
It is almost unrecognisable now because of the uncontrolled vegetation that obscures most of the viewshaft.
A few hours of attention from a competent arborist would restore its beauty and its visitor numbers.
Another neglected and once popular tourist spot is the Cliff Road lookout.
Here again, the splendid views are obscured by unmanaged vegetation.
Our town is endowed with outstanding natural beauty and I do congratulate the council for its mostly very impressive management of our physical environment.
Just a bit of attention to these few available options could help to revitalise the place – and the economy along with it.
