They may have missed out on a spot in the final, but the Ōpōtiki women’s rugby team can be proud of their efforts this season.
A 31-10 loss to Te Puna in the Baywide Championship semifinals at Princess Street Reserve meant the season came to an end, but there was no sign of disappointment from the Ōpōtiki team. It was one of only two losses for the season, with the other to TVC.
Kamryn Harrison and player-coach Helena Coughlan scored the tries in the defeat.
Coughlan said she was proud of everyone’s performances on the field throughout the season.
“It wasn’t the result we wanted, but it was a really awesome game.”
“It’s been an amazing season connecting and creating a safe environment for our ladies on and off the field.”
She was delighted to see so many players improve each week.
“Seeing our young ladies coming through and stepping up, seeing our ladies develop and improve as players and seeing the ladies having fun out on the field and enjoying women’s rugby, to me, that is what it’s all about and why I enjoy taking the team so much.”
Coughlan has enjoyed the coaching role, saying it has helped her grow and has shown her rugby in a different light.
She had no hesitation when asked if fans could expect to see Ōpōtiki on the paddock in 2027.
“We will definitely be back next year and hopefully the competition will be longer and feature more games.”
Overall, it was an awesome little season, she said, a lot of team bonding, growth and improvements on and off the paddock.
As for which players shone throughout the season, Coughlan could not name individuals.
“All the ladies stood out in their own way, giving their own flair to the team. Having young players, more experienced footballers and legends within the team was cool.”
TVC earned their spot in the final and rights to host it with a 42-14 win over Arataki.
Again, it was the Kopa sisters who shone, with Dane-a, Whaiora and Zakeiya combining for five tries, while Manawa Gates, Sarah Waititi and Manaia Sorenson also scored.
It kept their unbeaten run alive, and TVC will be hoping to take Sunday’s decider against Te Puna.
