Letters: We are not Coastlands

.

N Thompson

There was an article printed in the Beacon (Friday, May 22), “We are not Coastlands” saying the area was known as Pirpai, Paroa, and Poroporo and the land was confiscated.

They are both wrong.

The land had lots of pa located in different parts of the area and each pa had different names for different areas.

These are some of the names – Huna, Otekauarahe, Piripai and so on.

When the Government surveyed the area, the area was called Pupuaruhe.

Also, this land was never taken from the Māori.

The land was recorded in their name, and they had the right to sell the land (Source: The New Zealand Gazette).
