Letter: Punching well above their weight

I refer to Suzanne Williams letter Beacon, June 3.

Prior to shifting to Whakatāne, I was told about the amazing theatre productions produced here.

Upon arriving in Whakatāne, I quickly volunteered to assist with front of house duties.

Right from the first show I was involved in, the comments I had heard about the depth of talent and expertise within Whakatāne Theatre rang true, and in fact, on many occasions, exceeded my expectations.

Matilda The Musical was yet another amazing production. I do not know how anyone could say they could not pick an outstanding talent from among the children, but they acquitted themselves with great enthusiasm.

Yes, they were enthusiastic, but they were also all very talented and disciplined.

And as for comments about the audience screaming and yelling, well, the very nature of the show lent itself to audience participation, but more importantly, to the audience showing enthusiasm and encouragement to the young actors, all of whom gave a truly magnificent performance.

The stage set was simple but amazing and moved on and off stage with precision and so unobtrusively.

The choreography that occurred skirting between moving swings was amazing and the finale with so many scooters coming and going with precise timing had to be seen to be believed.

Working front of house, I had the extreme pleasure of observing the great age variance that supported the show.

In particular, younger family members dressed in their very best, excitement brimming over as they embarked upon, in some cases I would guess their very first taste of the amazing Theatre Whakatāne has to offer.

They punch well above their weight. And Matilda the Musical was no exception. Congratulations to you all.
