Ōpōtiki College has welcomed a new face to its growing wellbeing and student engagement programmes, with Natasha “Tash” Nathan recently appointed as the school’s Kia Hiwa Rā (KHR) facilitator.
Passionate about sport, movement, and supporting rangatahi, Nathan brings strong local connections to the role.
A parent of two students at the college, she says she is looking forward to working alongside students and whānau in a positive and inclusive environment.
Programme coordinator Sherie Mata is excited about the new health initiative.
“This is an awesome opportunity that promotes great leadership and inclusiveness within our school.
"We also have a great student committee on board to help Tash with the day to day running and inspire everyone to get involved and get active” she said.
The Kia Hiwa Rā programme is designed to encourage daily movement and participation for all students, regardless of sporting ability or experience.
With a focus on fun, connection, and wellbeing, the initiative aims to create opportunities for rangatahi to get active in ways that feel welcoming and achievable.
Nathan’s background and enthusiasm for sport and community participation made her a natural fit for the position
Earlier this month, the college held an official launch event for the Kia Hiwa Rā programme, giving students and whānau the chance to meet Nathan, learn more about the kaupapa behind the initiative, and connect with others involved in the programme.
Healthy food and activities were also part of the afternoon.
The appointment reflects a continued focus at Ōpōtiki College on student wellbeing, participation, and creating supportive pathways for young people both inside and outside the classroom.
As the programme develops, Nathan said she was excited to be part of the journey and help encourage rangatahi to embrace movement, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles.
