The EBOP Junior Badminton competition is under way, with 64 students taking to the courts every Friday evening in what has quickly become a highly competitive yet inclusive event for young players across the Eastern Bay.

Students have been placed in divisions based on their ability and experience, with several close and hard-fought matches already taking place over the opening two weeks of competition.

Defending 2025 singles champion Annabelle Plunket has carried her strong form into this year’s tournament, remaining unbeaten so far.

Her experience, composure and shot selection have seen her record several convincing victories, although she has also faced some challenging contests in the boys' division, including matches against Bay of Plenty representative Liam Kloppenburg.

Becca Harris has also impressed early in the girls' competition, producing several strong performances to record notable wins.

Other standout performers include Jayde Simmons, Toula Haddock and Jessica Standen, who all remain unbeaten in their respective divisions.

In the boys’ competition, Casper Wren and Ants Boswell have made unbeaten starts to the season.

Event organiser Will Doney said the standard of competition had been impressive across all divisions.

“Several matches have gone right down to the wire, with five games already needing to be decided by a golden point to determine the winner,” he said.

“We’ve structured the competition slightly differently this year, with boys and girls competing on the same night and match times mixed throughout the evening.

“That has created a great atmosphere, where students not only get the opportunity to play, but also watch and learn from others.

“For many of our newer players, being able to watch experienced competitors such as Annabelle, Liam and Becca compete has been really inspiring.”

Doney said the competition highlighted the positive impact of badminton clubs across the district.

“Our students are really making the most of the amazing opportunities provided by clubs such as Whakatāne Badminton Club and Awakeri Badminton Club.

“They are learning key skills, gaining valuable match experience, and applying that knowledge and confidence in this competition each week.”

Doney also noted the growing reach of the competition, with students travelling from throughout the wider Eastern Bay to take part.

“It has become a true local competition, with students attending from schools across Whakatāne, as well as Matatā, Kawerau, Waimana and Ōpōtiki.”

The competition continues this Friday and will run until the end of the school term.
