Letter: What's the plan council?

.

Marian Weaving

The Beacon published a story some months ago regarding the potential use of the Wally Sutherland site as an arts hub.

To put this initiative into the community agenda, can Whakatāne District Council please provide some indication as to whether a master plan has been created for the site, what initiatives are being discussed, cultural groups involved, funding required and a timeline for work to be undertaken?

The council functions, such as roads, rates and rubbish, are critical services for the community, however, artistic projects and initiatives often bring a community together and serve to promote diversity and difference.

Whakatāne District Council general manager community experience Alexandra Pickles responds:

Thank you for your letter and continued interest in the Arts Hub (former Wally Sutherland) site.

Whakatāne District Council has entered into a lease agreement for the property, which is a commercial premises.

The council is still working through the terms of that lease, and as such, it would be premature to confirm specific plans, timelines or funding commitments at this stage.
