Aidan Campbell ran really well on the Whakatāne Harriers Lathams Track Race on Saturday to win the Lathams Track Trophy.
Campbell won the Bayliss Trophy on handicap, with a handicapped time of 73.34, just ahead of Neil Jones’ 73.44, Mark Crouchley in 73.47 and David Milne un 73.55.
Amazing handicapping by the club handicapper, Peter de Feijter.
There was a superb turnout of 42 runners, walkers and officials for the race on a beautifully fine autumn’s day.
The long course started from the foot of the hill and went to the Trig, followed by a traverse along the tops through to the next high point and return.
Course conditions were steep and slightly heavy and muddy, and much thanks has to be given to Colin Latham for use of his land and work on the track following damage in Cyclone Vaianu, as well as to famer Matt Barr.
Fastest time for the 7.2km long course was Joel Stansloski in 33.10, with Campbell second in 34.34, Carl Edmondson third in 35.36 and David Milne fourth with 36.55.
These four all finished before the 5.2km runners.
Fastest woman was Rosie Milne in a super 48.25, ahead of Michele Verry, Chrissy Weeks and Catherine Jones. These runners will take a good lead into the club Mountain Race Series.
The 5.2km race to the Trig and return was won by Azelle Stansloski in a very good run.
Second was young Jabu Crouchley in 38.24, Shona Stewart was third in 38.39 and Tony Maxwell followed with 43.27.
Musa Crouchley ran 44.55 just ahead of Evergreen Nancy Miller in 45.40.
Many thanks also to Kelly Shallow and Paul Jamieson for setting up the course, complete with juniors’ balloons and prizes and a 7.2km draw.
The balloons were worn attached to the junior runners’ arms and had to be returned, popped or not, to receive a prize.
Ryker Hauser won the 2.5km race through tough terrain in a good 14.00, with Iris Stansloski close behind in 14.10 and very good runs by John Stansloski in 15.15, Parker Shaw in 17.22 and Thomas Edmondson in 17.38, just ahead of Robert Sanderson’s 17.52. Thandi Crouchley was the second female in 19.48, just ahead of Melissa Hauser in 17.49
