An observational comment from Jane van der Beek in Wednesday’s Beacon on university degree students not being able to get a job; this is not a new thing to happen.
When our son graduated from Waikato University about 10 years ago, he introduced us to one of his lecturers Jaqueline Rowath CNZM.
She told us that of the 400-plus graduating, only about a quarter would find work associated with their degree.
Potential university students with their parents need to look at the subjects they are looking at taking and the job prospects relating to a degree with those subjects.
If you are going to accumulate debt through a student loan, but not get a job to service the debt from that degree, maybe the subject was not a wise choice.
There are many options other than university where you can work while learning a trade and not getting into debt while training as you are employed while learning.
Our two university-trained children both had jobs offered to them on graduation.
