While many sports teams turn to quiz nights and raffles to raise funds, one Bay of Plenty rugby coach is taking a far more demanding route – pounding the pavement for nearly 75 kilometres.

George Playle, coach of the Matatā senior men’s rugby team, is preparing to run from Rotorua to Matatā on Good Friday to raise up to $25,000 for his beloved club.

The idea is deeply personal. Playle said the challenge was inspired by his late grandfather, Patrick Playle, who was well known for cycling long distances, including regular rides between Rotorua and Matatā.

“Riding that distance was nothing out of the ordinary for him,” Playle said.

“I live in Rotorua now and travel home to Matatā every week for training, so the journey has always been in the back of my mind.”

More recently, his motivation has been strengthened by his mother-in-law, Kaye King, who completed the gruelling 102km Tarawera Ultra in tough conditions.

“She’s been a huge influence on the running events I’ve done over the years,” he said.

Now, the challenge has taken on a greater purpose.

“The biggest driver is wanting to do something bigger than myself – to give back to my rugby club, support the community, and help build something better for our kids coming through.”

The run, which will begin near the old Emery’s Store site by Rotorua Airport and finish at the Matatā Rugby Club, ventures into unfamiliar territory for Playle.

“I haven’t done anything of this magnitude before – 70 to 75 kilometres is a big step up,” he said.

It’s going to be a challenge, but one that excites Playle.

Despite balancing rugby commitments and regular CrossFit sessions, Playle has been managing weekly training distances of around 30 to 35 kilometres.

“Not as well as I had hoped, but it’s going alright. The legs are definitely feeling it, but I know it will all be worth it once the run is done.”

He won’t be tackling the journey alone. Friend Keegan has committed to running the full distance, while others, including AJ Moke, may join along the way. Support is also expected from family, friends, and members of the Matatā rugby and netball communities.

Playle hopes the effort will inspire strong backing from local businesses and residents.

“My goal is to raise between $20,000 and $25,000,” he said.

“It sounds like a lot, but this is about creating something better for our club – better facilities, better opportunities, and a stronger future for our kids.”
