A Mason Raynes’ hat-trick propelled Paroa to an emphatic victory in the opening round of the EBOP senior rugby competition.
Playing in the premier men competition against Rūātoki at Lawson Park, the home side proved too strong, running out 48-10 victors.
First five-eighth Raynes, who is in his fourth year with the club, really stepped up and controlled proceedings.
He was strong on defence, but also showed outstanding attacking flair and tactical kicking when required.
Paroa’s other try scorers were Ethan Wharewera, Muri Stewart, Clark, Zayden Paul and Keanu Kepa.
The best for Rūātoki in a losing cause were Lacey Tuhaka, Whare Williams, Edward Hohua and halfback Nelly Wera-Cook.

At Poroporo Park, it was an impressive showing from the visiting Te Teko side who ran out comfortable 57-10 winners over Poroporo.
It’s a new look Poroporo team and despite the scoreline, they showed plenty of promise.
Te Teko ran in some superb tries and were outstanding across the park, showing they’ll be hard to beat this season.
Raymond Phillips and Dylan Maui were the best for Poroporo, while it was a strong team effort from Te Teko.
At Rugby Park, Whakatāne Marist ran out a whopping 84-26 winner againt Tāneatua to start Hamuera Hudson’s coaching career in style.
Fullback Senjiale Valesasa was a standout, using his power and pace to help himself to four tries.
Midfielder Tevita Seruisavou bagged a double, as did hooker and captain Liva Sili.
Others to score were William Helu, Ryshawn Kereama-Vercoe, Hudson, Tamati Te Pou, Ratu Gabireli and Ro Cava Devo.
Tāneatua managed four tries through Charles Ratu, Tane Ruru, Jamie Nahi and Wesley Herewini.
It may have been a blowout, but Tāneatua showed they’ll be competitive as the season continues.
In the senior reserve competition, just two games took place.
Te Teko B played Poroporo B and won 19-0 in an entertaining clash.
They managed three tries and kept the home side scoreless.
In the other senior reserve clash, Matatā were too strong for neighbours Edgecumbe, running out 20-0 victors.
Matatā scored two tries, two conversions and two penalty goals in the win.
The next round of matches on April 11 sees Matatā take on Paroa Senior Reserves and Waimana host Edgecumbe.
In the premier grade, Tāneatua host Paroa, Tihirau Victory Club make their first appearance of the season with a home clash against Whakatāne Marist and Rūātoki welcome Te Teko to Tiwi Black Park.
