With the roar season approaching, police are urging hunters to take extra precautions.
The roar is the mating season for deer and occurs from mid-March to the end of April in New Zealand.
Male deer become vocal and bold, leading to increased hunting activity.
“A reminder to all people who are going out hunting, have a safety plan,” said Senior Sergeant Cam MacKinnon. “I cannot reinforce this enough. Tell someone outside of the hunting group where you are heading in the bush.”
He said hunters should wear high-visibility clothing, avoid going alone, and practise firearm safety.
“Be visible and hunters shouldn’t be walking around with loaded firearms. Take all safety precautions to avoid accidents.”
He also urges them to be prepared for changing conditions and carry emergency equipment.
