Twelve riders and their horses from the Horse Sports Ōpōtiki club 2023 will travel to Tūrangi at the end of the month, joined by their whānau, to compete for the long-standing Gamblers Trophy.
The trophy was first established in 1993 by the well-known Church family as a fundraising event.
The annual competition brings together eight teams in a contest of skill and sportsmanship.
The winning team earns the right to host the following year’s event.
Ōpōtiki claimed the trophy in 2024, securing hosting rights for 2025.
However, they were unable to retain the title on home ground last year, with the trophy instead going to Tongariro, who will host this year’s competition in Tūrangi.
“We wish the Ōpōtiki team the best of luck and safe travels to all riders and their whānau who are travelling to Tūrangi,” said Anne Collier, who has whānau competing.
This year’s eight competing teams are Ōpōtiki, Coasties, Putauaki, Rerewhakaaitu, Rotoiti, Tongariro, Tūrangi, and Ruatoki.
The competition will take place on March 28 at Turangitukua Park.
