Letter: Weka woes

.

Peter Fitzgerald

I live in the country at Awakeri. About five years ago I saw our first weka.

Since then, I have seen the quail disappear, then the pukeko, then the pheasants, then the ducks and now the occasional kiwi that I saw at night have gone.

I have watched three weka come out of the long grass and totally destroy a magpie that was on the ground.

Can something be done about these killing machines?

The only bird sound I hear at night are now, you guessed it, weka.

Kiwinui will soon be called Kiwinone.
