Motorsport racer Christina Orr-West is ready to get back into her V6 “Bell” following a three-month break

The Edgecumbe-based dairy farmer is racing in the NZ Six Sedans with the purple and grey Falcon this season and, with two rounds down and no issues, she is loving the new class of racing and is looking forward to returning to Hampton Downs this weekend.

In the opening round at Manfeild, which is her favourite track, Orr-West put on a dominant display, winning her class and races, while at Hampton Downs she was second overall behind Brad Wenzlink, but still her class winner.

“I am going for the chocolates this weekend. It’s about getting three race wins,” she said.

Orr-West admits the long break has her eager to return, but at the same time it has provided a good chance to freshen up ahead of what will be a busy two months.

“It is a long time, especially when we didn’t get all our races in last time at Hampton Downs, so I’m definitely itchier than usual to get back out there behind the wheel.”

Drivers have the chance to do some testing before qualifying but Orr-West has opted not to do this.

“I am not going to do the practice on Friday. I will head up with the car that afternoon. I will just go straight into qualifying on Saturday.”

She said she has been lucky with her car, with only some replacement brakes needed, which were installed over summer.

“I noticed at Hampton Downs last time that my brakes might not handle the track well. It was very rear braked as I was worried I could take someone out. Going into qualifying, I think I have sorted it all out.”

Orr-West is enjoying the laid-back environment in her class.

“I mean everyone loves winning and the stats look great as a driver. It’s obviously way different and more like how I was when I was younger.

“Everyone tries to help, it’s way cruiser, a lot friendlier. You are happy to be out on the track.

“I wish there were more cars in my class, but they start me off at the back so I still have to do a lot of driving to get to the front.”

Following this weekend’s outing, she has a round in Taupō in a fortnight, an hour race in Taupō in late April and then the final round returns to Hampton Downs in May.

Orr-West has three races across Saturday and Sunday to extend her lead in the class and series.
