The Whakatāne Tennis Club has served its way into 2026 with another successful season of its popular twilight tennis programme.

The season began with the nets going up at the end of January, and the club continues to welcome players every Thursday evening from 5.30pm to 8pm throughout the year.

Club member Kay Montgomery, who helps administer twilight tennis, enjoys seeing the courts come alive each week.

“Anyone can walk in and participate. You don’t have to be a member to play, although it is cheaper in the long run.

“Thursday night is a real mix of people, which is exactly how it’s supposed to be.

“It’s very social and perfect for first-time players,” said Montgomery.

The programme attracts a wide range of participants. One regular player, aged 92 or 93, has been playing at the club for 17 years and regularly shares the court with high school exchange students.

Opponents are drawn using a card system, meaning players never know who they will face next – a format designed to keep the evening light-hearted and fun.

“It’s been popular. You get out there, meet new people, and have some fun. That’s what it’s all about really,” Montgomery said.

Players appreciate the low-competition, no-stress environment.

While ideal for beginners, the club also offers access to pickleball, which complements tennis well and provides another option for those keen to try something different.

Twilight tennis runs year-round from 5.30pm to 8pm, allowing people to pop in straight after work or whenever it suits.
