Letter: Common sense needed in approach to stray cats

J Rees says we owe a big vote of thanks to people in town who feed and desex the stray cats out of their own pockets (Ōpōtiki News, February 12).

That’s fine, if they take these cats to their properties and not expect others to put up with the large numbers that kill birdlife, defecate on lawns and gardens, and enter our houses and garages, as well as destroying outside furniture.

We also wonder where the influx of young cats come from if there is all-round desexing as the writer implies.

With regard to cats, J Rees wrote of common sense. Surely common sense is having one or two animals (dogs/cats) as pets per household and not relying on do-gooders to feed and de-sex them, and thus having dozens of strays on the property.

Also common sense is observing the rights of your neighbours and other people in the street.

We suggest J Rees pays for and supplies us with traps, so the cats can be taken to his/her property as companion pets.

There they can be fed and looked after, and we can gladly be pussy free.

Isn’t that common sense?
