The annual Slims Bar family fishing competition was hailed a huge succes and drew a record crowd this year.

Held last weekend, there were a record-breaking 240 participants ranging all ages competing in five categories: snapper, gurnard, kahawai, kingfish and the kids’ snapper section.

The competition had a rainy start, with Friday’s fishing day postponed because of the weather.

But that didn’t stop the fishing fun during the rest of the weekend, with fishers in boats and surfcasting in fierce competition for cash and spot prizes.

Slims Bar owner, Slim McCallion, said that the competition would not be possible without the support from the many Ōpōtiki businesses that sponsored the event and donated the spot prizes.

McCallion was grateful to all the families and individuals who came out to compete in the competition.

He was thrilled to have had the biggest turn out that they have ever seen.

Winning kingfish: Waata Houia with his first and second place kingfish.
Big catch: Eva Webb with her snapper.
