With nominations closing in less than a week for two Whakatāne District Council community boards, only one nomination has been received so far.
These by-elections follow insufficient nominations in the October triennial elections. While Jesse Morgan-Ranui was appointed as a councillor for Toi ki Uta Māori Ward, one position remains vacant on the Murupara Community Board (Galatea-Waiōhau subdivision) and three positions are unfilled on the Tāneatua Community Board.
Manager governance services Chirese Viljoen said those interested in making a meaningful difference in their community should consider this opportunity.
“With only one week left, we really hope the right people put their names forward. If you’re passionate about Murupara or Tāneatua and keen to be a voice for your community, we encourage you to act before nominations close next week. Community Board members also receive a modest payment for their service, and no prior experience is needed – just a commitment to your community.”
Nomination forms are available online or from the Whakatāne District Council Civic Centre at 14 Commerce Street, Whakatāne, and the Murupara Service Centre in Civic Square, Murupara.
Nominations of candidates must be in the hands of the electoral officer or an electoral official at one of the above locations no later than 12 noon on Monday, December 22.
