Whakatāne’s Have a Heart Charitable Trust Community Store is gearing up for a big week, starting with a $2 fill-a-bag garage sale on Sunday behind their store at 50 King Street, Kopeopeo.

Shoppers are invited to bring their own bag and fill it with selected clothing as the store clears a growing collection of quality pre-loved items with minor imperfections.

A small selection of mattresses and furniture will also be available.

Following Sunday’s sale, the store launches its festive initiative, “Surprise Gifts for Little Hearts,” starting on Tuesday next week.

Parents who make a purchase and bring their child with them will receive a new toy for their child, while stocks last.

It’s part of the store’s Christmas “tropical theme” and its commitment to making the season brighter for local families.

Store manager Anja Kleinschmidt has been in the role since July when the shop underwent a full revamp,

“I love working with people, and I’m blessed with the volunteers I have,” she said. “We’re open to everyone – no matter where you’re from, you’re welcome here.”

Volunteers describe the store as a warm, inclusive place that feels more like a boutique than a second-hand shop.

Regular helper Faye Garrood said customers often commented on the dignity and quality offered: “A lady told me last week, ‘I feel like I’m in an upper-class shop.’ That means a lot.”

The Have a Heart Charitable Trust is dedicated to strengthening whānau, uplifting diverse communities, and creating spaces where every person feels valued and supported.

As part of the trust, the community store helps fund vital work, including supporting the Whare Kai Affordable Pantry at 8b Merritt St, which provides good food at prices families can manage.

The Whare Kai Affordable Pantry is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am-2pm.

The community store is also seeking additional volunteers, particularly those comfortable serving customers at the shopfront. The store is open Tuesday to Friday from 10am-3pm, and on Saturday from 9.30am-1pm.
