Two wastewater overflows have caused “Polluted Water” warning signs to pop up around Whakatāne over the past week.
The first was at Red Conway Park due to a wastewater overflow behind a Strathmore Place property flowing on to the field.
The overflow was contained by Whakatāne District Council’s three waters team, who cleared the blockage.
The site is being disinfected but part of the park was cordoned off as a precaution.
The council will also be testing nearby waterways and said it would share updates as more information becomes available.
Kiwi Waste has flushed the pipe to make sure everything is flowing properly again, and the site is being disinfected. As a precaution, part of the park will be cordoned off until it’s safe to access again.
Another wastewater overflow came from a privately owned property on Mokorua Grove, Whakatāne, pictured above.
Wastewater flowed onto public land and subsequent testing of Waiewe Stream showed elevated levels of bacteria in the water.
Three waters manager Jim Findlay said signs would remain in place until the water quality returned to an acceptable level.
“We ask the public to avoid the area, especially when walking dogs, until the signs are removed.”
