Sunday, November 2, saw a strong contingent from the Whakatāne Harriers Club head north for the annual Auckland Marathon.
The marathon kicked off with an early 6am start in Devonport, flowing up and over the Harbour Bridge, through the CBD, following along the waterfront to Mission Bay, and finally returning to town for a triumphant and festive finish in Victoria Park.
Bright sun and light winds proved the right conditions for the winners. Brigid Dennehy claimed the women’s title in a record time of 2.38.10. For the men, Daniel Balchin roared home in 2.19.55.
For the locals Joel Stansloski led the way in 2.38.04 , good for 13th overall and first in the 40-44 age category. Chris Lines was next in 2.47.12, taking 38th. Kendan Gibson (2.53.39) and Paul Jamieson (2.58.15) broke the impressive three-hour mark and took home a top- 100 place. Adrian Macquet finished in 3.03.31 with a strong, even-paced effort.
The Half Marathon saw an exceptional performance from Conor O’Toole, finishing with a huge personal best time of 1.15.22, taking 15th overall and second in the 30-34 age group. Kelly Shallow had a solid effort, finishing the 21km course in 2.00.29.
The races conclude a successful road racing season for the club, with athletics under way for the summer season.
Many club members will take part in the local Toi’s Challenge on Sunday, November 16, hosted by the club.
