Families looking for a fun and positive alternative to traditional Halloween celebrations are invited to this year’s Whakatāne Light Party, a free community event focused on joy, connection, and light.

Hosted by Kia Tahi – Whakatāne Combined Churches, the celebration will take place at the Whakatāne War Memorial Hall and adjoining Rex Morpeth Park on Friday, October 31, from 5.30pm to 7.15pm.

This carnival-style event will offer something for everyone – with stalls by churches, free games and face painting. Parents can relax with free coffee and cake in café-style seating, while tamariki enjoy a free sausage sizzle, noodles, and candyfloss inside the hall. Outside, the fun continues with rides and activities in the park.

Organisers say the Light Party provides a safe, family friendly alternative to Halloween’s spooky traditions.

“The Whakatāne Light Party is an expression of love and generosity towards the tamariki and whānau of our community,” said Kia Tahi leaders.

“On an evening that can be marked by darkness, the Light Party aims to be a safe, joyful and life-focused space that creates opportunity for immediate and longer-term connections with our community where Jesus may be proclaimed through words and actions.”
