Letters: Peace deal reached

.

Dave Stewart

My anticipation for a response from Keith Melville was rewarded this morning with his reply to my piece laying out chapter and verse about the unfair advantage the landlord class has due to the decisions made by successive parliaments chock full of landlords.

Keith’s response, (Landlords still pay the price Beacon Letters, October 15) was one of the strongest arguments I’ve read yet about the need to end the unfair tax free capital gains tax that attracts so much investment into the unproductive housing market as a free money pit for people who are work averse to wallow in.

I was so thrilled by his letter that I rode my bike into town early to make sure I would see him at our usual cafe and catch up with him.

I congratulated him on his powerful argument in favour of finally ending the bludger’s taxpayer-funded free lunch that is tax-free capital gains and he was gracious enough to shake my hand and accept that, yes, a capital gains tax was something he would support as well.

Peace in our time.

Can I get someone to nominate us for the next Nobel Peace prize?
