Hundreds of children enjoyed hours of free fun on Saturday at the Blue Light Activation Day.

Local police also got in on the fun, with Community Constable Rob Jones taking at least one soaking in the popular dunk-a-cop activity.

Indoor laser tag also proved a treat, with some people enquiring about how to hire the set up for their own events.

A large group worked together to pull a fire engine along the field, and kids tested themselves on the inflatable obstacle course.

Whakatāne Blue Light co-ordinator Christian Ihe said the day was a hit, with more children than expected turning up to join the fun.

“When we first began setting up, we had kids already waiting, circling the school and waiting for it to start.”

The intention is to make Activation Day an annual event, providing more free fun and opportunities for positive interactions with emergency services.
