Letter: Big rates reduction

.

Warwick Armstrong

Thanks to the National government for bringing in a big change to building. Horray!

It is going to leave construction to the builders, architects, draftspeople, engineers and insurance companies.

It’s the best news yet; me being an ex-builder. The council will be able to get rid of its building inspectors and engineers – big rate cuts.

They are finally giving the building back to the builder, which is how it should be.

If you look at our plans of big buildings such as the former bank that is now The Comm and has stood for years, the plans to build it were probably three pages. The way it is now, there are probably 50 pages of plans for a house, all doubling up on each other.

It’s the best thing National has done so far. The other thing is the scraping of inspectors of old buildings for earthquake strengthening.

Thank God someone’s getting some sense. I say, if a building can withstand a good earthquake, it’s okay.

We lost our beautiful big hospital, which the late Ian Lysaght built; he even went to the meeting when they were deliberating.

Madness – now we have a kitset hospital.
