Petera Wharepapa-Maxwell may not have won a medal in Japan, but he loved the experience.

The talented eight-year-old was representing both Oamarumutu and East Coast Jiu Jitsu Clubs (Ōpōtiki and Whakatāne) on the world stage at the SJJIF World Jiu Jitsu GI and No GI Championships in Chiba, Japan 2025.

It was a huge tournament for the eight-year-old and clearly the biggest event he’d fought in before, much bigger than what he’d come across in New Zealand.

Petera competed fiercely in the light feather divisions for both GI (23 competitors) and No GI (13 competitors); he even secured a win by submission in under a minute – incredible achievement at this level by someone his age.

Although he didn’t come away with a medal this time, the experience and atmosphere were unforgettable. He’s gained so much knowledge and confidence from this journey, and with fire in his belly, will be back stronger in 2026.

“A huge mihi and thank you to his amazing coaches, generous sponsors, supportive kura, and of course his whānau and friends – your aroha and backing made this possible,” his mum, Matewai Wharepapa-Maxwell, said.

She said Petera absolutely loved the experience and the opportunity to fight competitors from different countries throughout the world was a real honour.

He wants to go again in 2026 and will continue training hard and representing his two clubs with enormous pride.
