Riverslea Mall at Edgecumbe is enjoying a revitalisation with new businesses choosing to make it their home. Beacon reporter Tamara Herdman is profiling some of the mall’s newly opened and expanding businesses and this week, she meets barbers Larnz Glanville and Tum Hope.
A new barbershop has opened its doors in Riverslea Mall, Edgecumbe, and locals are already taking notice. Legacy Barbers – co-owned by experienced barbers Larnz Glanville and Tum Hope – is quickly making a name for itself as the go-to spot for fresh cuts, clean fades, and a unique vibe.
After honing their craft working in other barbershops, the pair decided it was time to step out on their own.
"As a barber you can stand behind someone else's chair or stand behind your own, we chose to stand behind our own chairs and be our own bosses," said Mr Hope, from Kawerau, who has been barbering for three years.
Ms Glanville has been barbering for six years and shares the vision of creating something new and memorable for the Edgecumbe community. “We wanted to do something different – something unique,” she said.
Legacy Barbers has been operating from its new premises for just three weeks, but already the shop is buzzing. "It’s getting busier every week. The vibes are pumping, the music’s good, and we’re getting nothing but positive feedback," said Mr Hope.
With its bold black décor, signature hexagon lighting, and walls lined with framed photos of iconic hip hop figures, the space is as sharp as the cuts they deliver.
Offering a full range of services - including cuts, fades, shaves, and eyebrow grooming - the team is aiming high. "We want to be the best barbershop in the Bay of Plenty," said Mr Hope. "We’re trying to bring something different to the community, not just with our skills, but with the whole setup."
The shop stocks popular Nishman products and even features a vending machine for added convenience. There’s plenty of parking right outside, and they welcome both walk-ins and bookings.
Legacy Barbers is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, with a late-night Thursday until 7pm - ideal for those who need an after-work tidy-up. Saturdays are by appointment only.
