Reighan Kingi has gone from unemployed to self-employed by mixing ingredients such as flour, baking powder, eggs—and plenty of determination—into a business topped with “Brown Sugar”.

Brown Sugar is a haven of flavoursome treats designed to keep even the most discerning taste buds coming back for more. After losing her job, Ms Kingi decided to take control of her future by creating her own opportunities. Baking for friends and family had always been an enjoyable way to pass the time, so she turned her passion into a business—and Brown Sugar was born.

“Driving past the old Mananui Takeaways building and noticing it had been empty for quite a while, I thought it could be a good place to set up shop—and here I am,” she said.

Operating since February this year, Brown Sugar has been both a challenge and an exciting journey for Ms Kingi.
“It’s a solo effort—it’s just me. The setting up, early starts, and juggling kids has been challenging, but it’s great.”

While café staples such as coffee are always on hand, it’s the creative, ever-changing menu that takes Brown Sugar to the next level. Caramel-loaded brownies, brown sugar cinnamon scrolls, and cupcakes that look almost too good to eat are just a taste of what’s on offer.

“I change up the menu all the time. Today we have Black Forest and Whittaker’s chocolate cupcakes, but next week it could be something completely different. I’m constantly updating my flavour combinations on social media so people can see what’s available.”

Another sweet sensation is the evolution of cake tubs. These sell out fast, with flavours like Nutella and Biscoff proving especially popular.

Don’t bother asking Ms Kingi for her recipes—that’s a closely guarded secret. But what isn’t a secret is the irresistible smell and taste of freshly baked goodness drifting from the top end of James Street. It’s worth a visit just to experience her warm welcome, and you’re guaranteed to leave with a smile to match hers.

Brown Sugar is open Tuesday through Saturday. But be quick – if you arrive after midday, you might miss out.
