Apanui School ended the school team last week with its 2025 production The Book Wizard, presented to sell-out audiences.

The Book Wizard told the story of a group of students who were encouraged to put down their digital devices and pick up a book. Moving from reluctance to acceptance and, finally, to enlightenment, the story was brought to life through visual art and song.

The concept stemmed from a discussion with Apanui principal, Mārama Stewart, who recalled a production at her previous school where children ventured inside a library to explore the books. From that idea, The Book Wizard was born.

Auditions were held at the start of term two by staff members, Esther Nielson and Aimee Elliott. Tamariki interested in trying out were given two scenes from the script and a week to learn their lines.

“We were looking at who had learned their lines, spoke with confidence, and really got into character,” Elliott said. “We were very impressed with the talent—it was actually quite hard to choose the leads. We were delighted with our choices.”

Those selected for lead roles committed wholeheartedly, giving up multiple lunchtimes each week for two terms and even organising their own group practices during the holidays. They learned their lines within the first few weeks and quickly began making the characters their own.

“Watching their confidence grow on stage was a highlight,” Elliott said.

Each class also had the chance to choose a book to base their performance around, with teachers choreographing a dance for their class. Staff and teacher aides created all the props and many of the costumes, with even the principal lending a hand by helping to make jellyfish umbrellas.

“There is so much hidden talent within our staff,” said Stewart. “My favourite part of Apanui’s productions is that every child in the school gets to be involved. It’s such a great experience, and one they remember for a long time.”
