Whakatāne has a new all-weather attraction in Gateway Drive that’s perfect for budding and experienced golfers.
The Indoor Golf Company brings the game inside, giving players the chance to practise their swing, compete with friends, and take on some of New Zealand’s best courses without stepping onto an actual fairway.
Owned and operated by Sean Leckie and his business partner, Ella Florence, the new simulator set-up is already taking a swing at those rainy-day blues.
“Sean saw a simulator in Tauranga, had a go, and thought it was a lot of fun,” Ms Florence said. “Now that it’s here and we’re open, it’s great to see the community getting into it and really enjoying the experience.”
The facility features four separate bays, each accommodating up to four players, making it ideal for a fun, competitive, and challenging game – whether you’re a golfer or just trying it for the first time.
“We’ve got the space for golf, day or night, rain or shine,” she said. “Even if you’ve only got an hour, you can come down and hit a few balls. We’re open for you.”
While The Indoor Golf Company provides some clubs, players are encouraged to bring their own. With 10 of New Zealand’s top courses, a selection of international venues, and even custom fantasy courses, there’s no shortage of variety.
The growing popularity of the facility means it’s wise to book ahead.
“We’re seeing a lot of repeat customers,” said Ms Florence. “Some are serious golfers who aren’t even part of the local golfing community, but a lot of people keep coming back.”
The pair are relatively new to the sport – Mr Leckie picked it up just 18 months ago – and they’ve found the simulator a great tool for improving their skills.
“Each simulator can mimic different weather patterns,” Ms Florence said. “You can switch on wind, for example, to replicate the challenge of playing outdoors. It adds another layer of complexity to your game.”
The Indoor Golf Company is open Fridays from 5pm to 9pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 3pm to 9pm. Memberships are also available, offering 24/7 access to the simulators for whenever the mood strikes.
Having been open only a few months, the team already has plans – possibly adding group or corporate bookings and maybe even serving a beer or two for a more social experience.
So, next time the weather’s against you, you’ve got the perfect excuse to hit the green – indoors.
