Letter: No safe access on Toi's Track

.

D Dempsey

I recently visited Whakatāne and went for a run along the beautiful Toi's Track.

However, I was shocked to discover that, after more than five years, there is still no safe access from the West End to Ōtarawairere Bay.

To continue on the track, I had to use a detour onto Ōtarawairere Road — where there is no footpath — and then cross the busy main Ōhope Road.

This is incredibly dangerous, particularly for visitors unfamiliar with the area. It’s hard to believe that nothing has been done to address this hazard, especially with the growing number of tourists and competitors drawn to Whakatāne for its natural attractions.

Must someone be seriously injured or killed before the council takes action?

For years the public has been told that “the land is still moving” as a reason for inaction. But how long must this excuse continue before a proper, safe solution is put in place?
