Letter: Drive to the conditions

.

Shirley Dippie

First, what a great letter from Penny (Beacon, August 8) about driver behaviour.

You really can't fix stupid.

I agree about the speed limit changes.

Ten days ago, as I was driving back to Whakatāne from Edgecumbe just prior to 5pm and was approaching the Thornton Road intersection. I noticed a small black car going rather fast as it was approaching the intersection from Thornton Road.

My first thoughts were this car is not going to stop and probably not give way.

It didn't and pulled straight out in front of me instead of pulling into the layby area (I assume it is there for those who can't wait.) it pulled into my lane. I had two vehicles on my right ready to turn into Thornton Road and a car right behind me. As I was prepared, I managed to stop. I’m not sure how close the car behind me was because I was too scared to look!

The driver of said car just carried on oblivious to the situation they could have been in. I would have hit them fair and square.

There are so many people out driving that don't seem to be able to read.  Stop signs and give way signs are there for a reason.

Changing the speed limit will not solve these issues.

Please, if everyone drove to the conditions and stopped at stop signs and were prepared to give way, we would all be a lot safer on our roads.
