Letter: Fire safety in the home

.

Suzanne Williams

We all tend to coast along thinking that we are bulletproof, don't we?  Earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, accidents and fires? – not us, they are things that happen to other people.

But the people who lived or died through one of these things thought the same thing before it happened to them.  Are you prepared?

We at Grey Power heard (and took part in) a most interesting presentation last month by Justin Douglas on emergency preparedness.  We are taking this theme one step further this month, with Ken Clarke of Fire Emergency giving a short address on fires and fire safety in the home.

Speaking as one who has endured the heartbreak of an incineration of her house (all my own stupid fault, too), I can't stress enough the importance of this knowledge.

This will be followed by a report on the meeting with the Minister of Health last week in Auckland, when five Grey Power members passed on their concerns over the increasing privatisation of the health system and the inequities it encourages, so that we are in danger of equalling the US in poverty of performance in the health sphere.

There will also be a report on the handing over of the Additional Bridge Petition to Dana Fitzpatrick for presentation to Parliament.

The meeting will be held at 10am on Wednesday, August 20 at the Knox Church.

All are welcome.
