Whakatāne Town men’s Baywide division 1 football team are certainly beginning to hit their straps.

In their last outing, the Pullar Builders-sponsored outfit had another convincing win, this time outclassing Te Puke Football Club, 3-1.

Te Puke piled on the pressure in the first 15 minutes but were unable to convert their chances.

Whakatāne veteran Nathan White opened the scoring with a one touch finish beating the Te Puke keeper.

Te Puke hit right back 20 minutes later with a terrific through-ball that caught Whakatāne off guard.

Again, Whakatāne’s fitness was key as Brendan Mitchell slotted one past the opposing keeper after slipping past the backline.

Rodney Stone sealed the victory with chesting the ball over a defender and volleying it home in what was a cracking goal.

Man of the match went to White, who is heading overseas but several others played well including Stone and youngster Charlie Waters. Jared McLaughlin acquitted himself well with a strong showing.

A top-of-the-table clash this week against league leaders Tauranga City Relics could decide the season.

Kick-off is at 12.30pm at Rex Morpeth and Whakatāne is hoping to have a large crowd of supporters on the sideline to cheer them home.
