Otakiri School will mark its 100-year milestone with a centenary celebration over Labour Weekend in October. Originally planned for 2020, the event was postponed due to the pandemic but is now set to bring together generations of students, staff, and community members.

Since opening in 1920, Otakiri School has played a vital role in the lives of families across the Rangitaiki Plains—offering education, sporting opportunities, and a strong sense of community.

The school’s humble beginnings trace back to the home of Phillip Jessup, where Miss E. Petty served as the sole teacher. Classes later moved to the Otakiri Hall before transitioning into purpose-built school facilities. Over the years, the school has expanded to eight classrooms and developed a variety of outdoor spaces, including a bike track added in 2019.

Sporting and cultural traditions have remained central to school life. Among the most cherished is “Marble Season,” played under the shade of the 100-year-old "Marble Tree."

One of Otakiri’s earliest pupils was the late Ivy Green, born in 1921. She attended the school during its barn house days and remained a lifelong supporter. She was “gutted” to miss the centenary due to its postponement. Her legacy continues today—her great-granddaughter, Bella Jeynes, is one of this year’s senior leaders at the school.

Deputy principal Heather Richmond, Mrs Green’s great-niece, says the school’s legacy runs deep.
“It’s not just a place I work, but for me there’s a real family connection, it’s sort of in my blood,” she said.
“This will be a special time for our community, past and present, to celebrate and look to the future of our special school.”

Principal Richard Gillespie agrees, noting that many families have maintained a strong connection to Otakiri School over the years.

“Lots of people have a long association with our school,” he said, expecting a strong turnout for the Jubilee weekend.

"The celebration will begin on Friday, October 24, with a school tour for past students and parents while current pupils are in class and enjoying sports. That evening, guests can enjoy a mix-and-mingle quiz night in the school hall, hosted by Yanina Wester.

"Attendees can bring their own drinks, while tea, coffee, and food platters will be provided. The quiz will test knowledge of Otakiri School “through the decades”."

Saturday will feature a gala day with symbolic tree planting, cake cutting, and group photos. Historic trophies and photo boards will be on display in the school hall. Families can enjoy old-school games, a bouncy castle, food trucks, and a high-tea style lunch.

Saturday evening’s festivities continue with a buffet dinner at the Awakeri Events Centre, catered by Cracked Pepper, with a cash and Eftpos bar available.

Centenary merchandise is available for preorder through the school or its website. Items include a set of two glass coasters, a glass wine tumbler, and a centenary magazine (published after the event), each priced at $10. Orders are essential.

Registration is $30 and includes a branded tote bag, lanyard, and pen. The school tour and Saturday morning formalities are free. Tickets for the Friday night quiz are $20, and Saturday night’s dinner is $70. Registrations close on September 19 and can be made by emailing: [email protected].

Jubilee Committee member Kris Byrne said the celebration was a community effort, highlighting local talent—including a school parent volunteering as the photographer and another baking the celebration cake.
“People will gather at the centenary out of sentiment. This really is a country school,” she said.
