A group of four friends have turned their crafting hobbies into a stylish party design side-hustle.

Offering balloons and balloon arch set ups, party design and decoration, signage, as well as rentable flower walls, Hiraya Party Styling is hoping to improve aesthetics at parties around the region.

Hiraya Party Styling started from a few favours for friends.

Nurse Lyka Bathan was asked to decorate and style a couple of baby showers last year and brought her then fiancé and fellow nurse, Jayson Olivarez, on board for building and logistics.

“That’s when we heard a lot of people say they think there’s potential here. I realised, ‘oh, I think we’re good at this’,” she said.

The couple put their entrepreneurial plans on hold while planning their wedding, but this year decided to start the business with the help of another couple, occupational therapists Dee Morales and Ghe Africa, who they have known for over a year.

Ms Morales said when she became friends with Mrs Bathan, she saw they had similar crafting interests through Facebook.

“I was like, I’m into crafts too, and told her to let me know if she needed any help,” she said.

“That’s when we decided to turn this into a business venture.”

When Ms Africa offered her accounting services, the team was established.

Ms Bathan said the group came up with the name “Hiraya” because it fitted what they did.

“It’s a poetic Filipino word that resonates with what we do. There is no direct English translation, but it means aspirations, hopes and dreams.

“The events we design are often the result of the hope of a person, the dream of a person – milestones and achievements.”

As well as working full time in their respective careers, the team designs and assembles the party decorations themselves, working with the client to match as close as possible to their preferences and budget.

They are available to style birthdays, weddings, baby showers, company gatherings and celebrations.

Ms Morales said, “Anything that requires design, we’re up for it.”
