New variable speed zones for two rural schools

.

New variable speed limits are now in place outside Waimana School and Te Mahoe School to help keep tamariki safe during busy pick-up and drop-off times.

The changes mean speed limits will temporarily reduce to 30 kmh during key times before and after school, returning to 50 km/h at all other times.

Under the new rules Waimana School (affecting Waimana Road and Raroa Road) will have fixed signs displaying a 30 kmh limit from 8am to 8.40am and from 2.50pm to 3.30pm. At all other times, the speed limit returns to 50 kmh.

Te Mahoe School (affecting all local streets within Te Mahoe Village) will feature electronic signs showing a 30 kmh limit from 8.20am to 9am and from 2.20pm to 2.50pm.

“These variable speed zones are a vital step in making our roads safer for tamariki," said Ann-Elise Reynolds, manager transportation at Whakatāne District Council.

“By slowing down traffic during the times when children are arriving at or leaving kura (school), we’re helping create a safer, calmer environment. We’re grateful for the community’s support in embracing these changes.”

The updates align with new national legislation introduced in late 2024, requiring reduced speed limits around schools to improve road safety. Remaining schools across the Whakatāne district will see similar changes rolled out in 2026.
