Another candidate for Kōhi Māori ward

Mawera Karetai has announced her candidacy for the Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s Kōhi Māori Ward.

Ms Karetai (Kai Tahu, Kati Mamoe, Rapuwai), is a dedicated environmental champion, university lecturer, governor and researcher who has lived in Whakatāne for the past 25 years.

Standing to continue the legacy of retiring ward councillor Toi Iti, who has decided to seek a general seat, Dr Karetai brings a strong commitment to community-focused leadership, grounded in the principles of kaitiakitanga, and prioritising mokopuna decisions.

“I am honoured to be asked to stand for the Kōhi Māori ward, following in the footsteps of Toi Iti, whose work in building connection has empowered our communities and championed the values that matter most to us,” she said.

“My professional practice has always been shaped by a deep respect for our mātauranga, and a commitment to kaitiakitanga in all aspects of my life, protecting our taiao for future generations.”

As a lecturer and researcher, Dr Karetai has worked alongside whānau, hapū, and iwi to advance kaupapa Māori research and support rangatahi in education.

As a governor, her work has focused on fostering strong partnerships within the community, promoting indigenous knowledge, and advocating for sustainable solutions that reflect the aspirations of Māori in Aotearoa.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council is responsible for environmental management and regional planning, including managing natural resources such as land, air, and water. It also plays a vital role in emergency management, regional transport, and supporting biodiversity.

"The continued delivery of these services is essential for a healthy, vibrant community, and there is currently a risk that some or all of these services may be lost as central government threatens regional democracy," Dr Karetai said. “We must protect what we have.”

“My vision is for a regional council that listens to our people, cares for its staff, upholds our values, and works collaboratively to create a thriving, resilient future. I am committed to ensuring that the voices of our whānau, hapū, and iwi are heard and respected in every decision.”

Dr Karetai pledges to:

· Uphold tikanga Māori in all council processes and decision-making

· Advocate for the integration of mātauranga Māori in mokopuna decisions,

· Champion kaitiakitanga to protect the whenua, awa, and moana,

· Foster transparent, inclusive engagement with all communities in the Kohi Māori ward

“I invite everyone in our rohe to join me in this journey. Together, we can continue Toi Iti’s legacy and build a future grounded in manaakitanga, kotahitanga, and tino rangatiratanga.”
