The Trust Horizon Light Up Festival kicks off next Saturday night in Whakatāne with a spectacular Opening Ceremony and Light Parade, launching eight nights of illuminated celebration.
Running from July 5 to 12, the festival transforms the town centre with a self-guided Art Trail featuring around 20 light-based installations, many of them brand new for 2025.
“We’re excited to welcome a range of fresh works alongside a few returning favourites from local artists, lighting up both outdoor spaces and empty shopfronts,” said Sam Poots, Art Trail event co-ordinator.
Expect an enchanting mix of projections, interactive artworks, and large-scale light sculptures that bring the CBD to life after dark.
“Community involvement has grown significantly this year, with more local groups and creatives contributing to the trail – a reflection of how this event continues to grow, sparking creativity and connection.”
One highlight not to miss is Ātea, an immersive large-scale installation by Tame Iti Ltd, located at the far west end of The Strand.
Festival highlights:
■ Lantern Decorating Workshop – Held tomorrow at Eastbay REAP, with four free sessions for all ages.
■ Adult Lantern Making Workshop – Led by artist Kerry Limmer on July 2, 4.30pm–6.30pm at Crew, Te Tahi Street.
■ Opening night (July 5) – Features a vibrant Dance Carnival, the Light Parade, live music, street performers, food trucks, a free photo booth, and light installations throughout the CBD.
■ Wednesday Night Wheels and Light Up Your Bike Workshop (July 9). Bring your bike, scooter, or skateboard for some wheelie good fun.
Throughout the week, the Festival Hub at Wharaurangi will serve as the go-to spot for maps, event info, entertainment, and tasty treats.
The Trust Horizon Light Up Whakatāne Festival is a community collaboration between Arts Whakatāne, the EPIC Town Centre Group, and the Whakatāne District Council – celebrating the arts, music, dance, and shared joy through light.
