Letters: Second bridge critical

.

Brendan Horan

I am writing in support of the Grey Power petition calling for Government funding for a second bridge in Whakatāne.

This project is not just a matter of convenience, it is a critical need for our community safety, resilience, and future growth.

Here are three vital reasons why a second bridge is urgently needed:

1) Safety and emergency access: We must ensure the town isn’t cut off during floods or other emergencies; With only one main bridge Whakatāne is dangerously exposed if that crossing is blocked by accident, natural disaster or maintenance. A second bridge would help ensure emergency services and residents can always get in and out of town safely.

2) Traffic and congestion relief:  The current bridge is a bottleneck especially during peak hours or holiday periods, a second crossing would ease congestion, reduce travel times and improve daily life for residents and businesses.

3) Supporting growth and economy: As Whakatāne continues to grow, our infrastructure must keep pace, a second bridge would support economic development, attract investment, make the town more attractive for families and businesses, and most importantly provide a modern and safe home for our future generations.

It is deeply disappointing that some councillors have repeatedly failed to back this essential proposal in council meetings, their lack of support ignores the clear needs and voices of the community, putting Whakatāne at risk, and holding back our progress.

Our leaders must put people before “petty politics” and act decisively for our town’s future.

I urge all residents to sign the petition and demand action from both our council and Central government. Whakatāne deserves better – let’s make a second bridge a reality.
