Emma Owen was the toast of the Whakatāne Football Club on Sunday after bagging home an impressive eight goals.
She popped up all over the park and showed some incredible skill in what was a fantastic win for the Whakatāne Town women, a 17-0 victory over Waiariki at Rex Morpeth Park.
She dribbled her way past defenders to slam home goals, finished off passes and shot from afar; it was a footballing day out that Owen won’t forget in a hurry.
Rex Morpeth is a ground the ladies love and in the past, they’ve racked up some impressive scorelines. Although Waiariki were spirited and enthusiastic, they were no match for a Whakatāne side that were stronger across the park with a solid defence and some slick passing combinations.
A great performance up front from captain Abby Brogden who netted goals was complimented by a player-of-the-match performance from left midfielder Owen.
Katie Peterson was another to put in an impressive showing by bagging two goals, while Chelsea Kerr hammered home a double too.
In six league games this season, Town have scored an impressive 42 goals and conceded just six to sit top of the standings.
With no goals submitted from the Papamoa game earlier in the season where Whakatāne Town won 4-3, Brogden and Owen have managed 13 goals between them, accounting for more than half of the team’s total so far.
The weekend prior to the Waiariki victory, they outclassed neighbours Plains Rangers 5-0.
The team are next in action on June 29 with an away contest against Wahine Toa Te Puke United, who are sixth.
