Otakiri School’s fun colour run has raised more than $10,000 for new trampolines.

With colours, police cars, fire engines and obstacle courses, there was plenty to be excited about at the event last Friday – including the “sliming” of their school principal Richard Gillespie.

Mr G, as he is known, told the students if they raised more than last year’s $7000, they could dump a bucket of slime on his head.

With such an incentive, the students reached the target weeks before Friday’s event.

The fun run was organised by teacher Catherine Thomas and administrator Michelle Jordan.

The students donned white T-shirts and tackled the fun run with glee, conquering obstacles and activities such as tunnels, balancing, skipping, hurdles and army crawling while being doused with paint and bubbles by parents, teachers and police officers.

In their year groups, the 101 students ran the course as many times as they could and raised $10,230. This included $1000 raised by Bryar Awhimate alone.

For her effort, Bryar was given the honour of dunking Mr G, who arrived reluctantly for his sliming in the back of a police vehicle, with flashing lights and siren.

The first bucket of cold, blue slime missed, but unluckily for Mr G, there was a back-up bucket.

Bryar hit the target, emptying the bucket onto the principal to the roaring cheers of her peers.

Constables Kim Welsh and Maddie Thompson had a great time at the fun run.

“It’s about prevention and breaking down barriers between the kids and police. It’s good for them to see police having fun and engaging with schools,” Ms Welsh said.

Towards the end of the afternoon, a fire truck rocked up to hose everyone off after the chaos of colour and slime, fittingly creating a rainbow in the school field.
