Letter: 80kmh-100kmh?

.

To whom it may concern @Land Transport. I’m writing to express my disappointment and let’s be honest, confusion, over the decision to raise the speed limit on certain roads from 80kmh back to 100kmh.

Now I’ll admit at 80 years old, I might fit the textbook definition of a stick in the mud, but I like to think of myself more as a well-travelled type. I’ve seen a lot of roads, a few ditches and more than enough white crosses by the roadside to know that speed isn’t just a number, it’s a gamble.

Slowing the pace to 80kmh wasn’t just easier on my heart rate, it made sense.

These roads are winding, narrow and about as smooth as a corrugated iron roof.

And those deceptive corners, let’s just say they’ve earned the name. I can’t be the only one who’s felt their stomach do a little loop de loop halfway through a turn.

But, most importantly, if sticking to 80kmh saves even one life or reduces crash trauma by event 10 percent, isn’t that worth the slight inconvenience of arriving three minutes late?

Life’s short, I’d just rather it be short because we enjoyed it not because we sped around a bend and didn’t make it out the other side.

Please reconsider the change for those of us who have been around long enough to remember when safety meant holding on to your hat in a Morris Minor.

We know better now. Let’s not speed backwards.
